Is there a dirty diesel filter? If so, replace it first. Has the tank sailed empty? Then fill it sufficiently.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1019\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1065\"><strong data-start=\"1025\" data-end=\"1065\">Step 2: Vent the pre-filter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1170\">Most boat engines have two fuel filters, and two fuel pumps. We start by following the fuel line from the tank, working our way toward the engine.<\/p>\n<p>Usually from the tank, the first thing you encounter is the pre-filter. That's a fuel filter that often has a sight glass under it. Is the fluid in the sight glass clean? Is it transparent and a little yellow? Then it's good. If it's cloudy, or completely colorless, it's not good. This is usually a mechanical pump mounted on the engine block. When we pull it back and forth, we pump the diesel through. Before we do this, we first follow the line further up the engine, to the fine filter. On the fine filter you will find a small screw, usually 10, 12 or 13mm. This is the breather screw. Open this one turn.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6478\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6478\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6478\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vaarzeker.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fijnfilter-300x252.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vaarzeker.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fijnfilter-300x252.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vaarzeker.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fijnfilter-14x12.png 14w, https:\/\/www.vaarzeker.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/fijnfilter.png 502w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bleed screw<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After opening the bleed screw, start pumping on the boost pump. The sight glass under the pre-filter should now fill with diesel. We keep pumping until a steady stream of diesel comes out of the screw. Then you can close the screw again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1583\" data-end=\"1586\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1065\"><strong data-start=\"1025\" data-end=\"1065\">Step 3: Start the engine and check for problems<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Is the breather screw closed again? Then we will now start the engine to see if everything works again. Does the engine immediately start again? Then check that you don't see any more diesel leaking anywhere. Does the engine still not start? Then proceed to step 4.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2030\" data-end=\"2033\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2089\"><strong data-start=\"2039\" data-end=\"2089\">Step 4: Vent the atomizers (if necessary)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2193\">If the engine still won't start, there may be air in the fuel lines to the injectors, the high-pressure system.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6480\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vaarzeker.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/verstuivers-300x275.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vaarzeker.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/verstuivers-300x275.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vaarzeker.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/verstuivers-13x12.png 13w, https:\/\/www.vaarzeker.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/verstuivers.png 402w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glands on atomizers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"2195\" data-end=\"2216\"><strong data-start=\"2198\" data-end=\"2216\">Here's how you do this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2542\">\n<li data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2336\">\n<p data-start=\"2219\" data-end=\"2336\">Look for the metal lines running from the pump to the engine - those are the fuel lines to the injectors.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2337\" data-end=\"2403\">\n<p data-start=\"2339\" data-end=\"2403\">Loosen the swivels (nuts) just a bit at the atomizers. Usually this is wrench 17.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2404\" data-end=\"2443\">\n<p data-start=\"2406\" data-end=\"2443\">Start the engine briefly.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2444\" data-end=\"2542\">\n<p data-start=\"2446\" data-end=\"2542\">After starting for a while, some diesel should squirt out at the unscrewed swivels. Stop starting.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2444\" data-end=\"2542\">\n<p data-start=\"2446\" data-end=\"2542\">Re-tighten the glands all together.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2544\" data-end=\"2658\"><strong data-start=\"2547\" data-end=\"2558\">Notice:<\/strong> Do this only if your engine really won't start after previous steps. Not all engines need this.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2660\" data-end=\"2663\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2700\"><strong data-start=\"2669\" data-end=\"2700\">Step 5: Check and launch<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2701\" data-end=\"2754\">Check all connections. Restart the engine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2756\" data-end=\"2882\">Does it run smoothly right away? Done!<br data-start=\"2789\" data-end=\"2792\" \/>Does it flicker or smoke?
